Basic Details To Know About The Beauceron

The Beauceron (also known as the “Beauce Sheep Dog” or “Red Stocking”) belongs to the herding breed class. They have a short black coat with tan or grey markings. The breed is believed to have first appeared in the 1500s. Herding and guarding sheep is the role they were initially bred for. They’re a popular choice as a herding or companionship dog in the modern day. They are characterized by their high intelligence, courage and demand for challenges. The breed is known to have originated in France and their earlier ancestors are shared ancestors with another French breed in the Briard.

They are classified as a medium to large sized breed. The standard male size is 65-110 pounds with a height of 25.5-27.5 inches, whereas the female measurements are 65-85 pounds and a height of 24-26.5 inches. They’re famous for their courageous and loyal personality. They are suitable as a protection dog, as they are mostly suspicious towards people they’re not familiar with. In comparison with every other breed, they’re confirmed to be highly smart, and are ranked quite highly when being trained to learn new commands.

They are fairly suitable for a family pet, seeing as they’re good towards kids. They do mix well with other animals like other dogs and cats when socialized. Looking after their coat is a simple task. They demand full grooming every 4 to 8 weeks, and occasional brushing of their coat every week (more in the shedding season). They won’t always be suited to apartment life, but like having a large yard that gives them room to run around.

Like the majority of medium to large sized dogs, they’re primarily shorter-lived and have a life expectancy of 10-12 years. Their most worrying health problem is hip dysplasia, and they can also be vulnerable to bloat and PRA. They have fun doing things such as herding, swimming, agility and games of fetch. They call for long (with varying routes) walks each day to reduce the risk of destructive behavior owing to their high level of energy.

If you bring home the Beauceron you should be able to meet their high demand for leadership, exercise and mental stimulation. They are less suitable for those with a less active lifestyle, but a perfect choice for active owners or those with a job for them. One of the reasons dog owners choose this dog is that it can be a great choice for defending the home and family due to its courageous and loyal nature.
