Portable Dog Crates

At some point or another, you will need to take your dog for a ride in the car.  Even if your dog is not the social type, he will eventually have to leave the house to at least see the veterinarian.   And when you do take him for a ride, you will want to ensure his safety and yours.  Why would riding in a car be dangerous to you and the dog?

A dog that has total access to a car can distract the driver.  It is as simple as that.  If your dog starts chewing on something, starts to choke on something, starts scratching up your seats, gets under the seat, or decides to jump into your lap, this can be completely distracting.  When drivers get distracted, tragedy can strike.

Safety

The main benefit for a travel dog carrier is safety.  Did you know that when a dog is thrown forward with extreme force, such as in an accident, he will increase significantly in weight?  Therefore, if your dog weighs 20 pounds, he would almost weigh 60 pounds in a crash.  Imagine if you had a German Shepherd or some other large breed dog. 60 pounds can turn into 600 pounds in a crash.  Now imagine the devastating effects this would have on not only the dog, but any passengers he/she may slam into.   A portable dog crate could keep your dog intact during an accident.

What happens if you have a car accident and your dog becomes disoriented or in shock?  First of all, your dog will not likely be rational, which can turn your sweet little or big dog into a mean one.  Hurt dogs are unpredictable no matter how sweet they are generally.   A disoriented dog can also wander away, especially if you are hurt and not able to watch him.  A portable dog crate will help to avoid a terrible situation from becoming worse.

Aside from safety, portable dog crates can provide a sense of security during travel.  Some dogs get very nervous when they have to go for a ride in the car.  A portable dog crate will make him feel more comfortable.    Portable dog crates also help to protect your car from being torn apart by a dog that loves to chew or dig.

What to Look for

When choosing a pet carrier, ensure the crate is stable and can handle the impact of an accident.  Some manufacturers actually advertise that their portable dog crates have been tested during a crash test.  They will then provide pertinent information regarding the details of the study.

It is also possible to purchase one that has an evacuation gate in the front.  This is helpful in case you are in an accident and the car is hit from behind and the tailgate is not able to be opened.  You will then be able to open the cage from the front.

There are adjustable metal dog crates available today.  The length and the width can be adjusted to fit in your particular model.  Car manufacturers also make portable dog crates that are specific to your vehicles.   Do not buy foldable crates.  These are not designed to withstand the strain of an accident.

Crates made from plastic can crack and break.  Chromed cages are not recommended as the chrome can be peeled off during their chewing time.  The best option for portable dog crates are galvanized crates because they won’t rust, have a metal tray that will not break, assemble easily, will outperform most dog crates, and will have a nice finish.

Where to Buy
